Harrison Heroes - Mira Hamour

Harrison resident, Mira Hamour, is thinking outside city borders and overseas to Syria. Mira directed, produced, and edited the short documentary Syria’s Tent Cities, a film examining the lives of Syrian refugees on both sides of the globe, as they try to build a better life through good education.

Harrison Heroes - Bill Hyland

Almost every day, you can find Bill behind the PATH station feeding a colony of cats. Bill is an integral part of the Harrison TNR (trap, neuter and release) program to help curb the number of stray cats. Not only does Bill take care of this cat colony, he is an animal advocate, frequently sharing calls to foster/assist other animals in need.

Harrison Heroes - Help 2 Feed

Instead of focusing on one person, today we are featuring a group of men and women who help feed the hungry in Newark every Tuesday night. Help 2 Feed is an organization sponsored by many Harrison businesses included Nino’s Pizzeria, Spanish Pavillion and Pechter’s Bakery and many of their volunteers come from Harrison. Every Tuesday night, a group of men and women leave the warmth of their homes, armed with dinner for those less fortunate.

Harrison Heroes - Erin Martins

Not only does Erin love dogs as much as we do, she is the founder of The Kearny Dog Walker! Erin is proof you can live your dream and help others at the same time. Earlier this year Erin created the TKDW First Annual Food Drive for the Associated Humane Society in Newark.

Harrison Heroes - Akbar Cook

Akbar Cook, the principal of West Side High School in Newark, was already known for being the driving force behind an anti-violence campaign called Lights On after losing a student to gun violence. This year, he received a $50,000 gift from Cheerios and The Ellen DeGeneres Show after a news story sharing that he installed free washers and dryers for bullied students at his school went viral.

Joia by Sol Mar

We’re always looking for restaurants and bars to explore. Joia, a new restaurant by Sol Mar on Ferry Street, opened up right in our backyard. We’re already huge fans and they have a ton of promotions. We just had to share!
